Pastor Selena was up to bat this morning as she started our new series, Home Run Life: Living Life by God’s Game Plan. Based off of the book by John C. Maxwell and Kevin Myers, this idea focuses on living a life through God’s pattern or plan. The key verse, Romans 12: 1-2 (NLT) states,
“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all He has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind He will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship Him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
God has a game plan, a pattern for your life.
Now, I don’t know a ton about baseball but I do know a homerun usually consists of four bases you need to pass by. Today we related those four bases to powerful words which allowed us to win with God. Then we connected the four bases to the story of Joseph.
Home Base - Connect – Win with God.
We essentially want to start connecting with God at home base to further our relationship with Him and circle the bases again to connect even more deeply. Joseph started at home base and truly learned to further his dependence on God when He was thrown in the pit by his brothers (Genesis 37: 26-28)
First Base - Character - Win Within
The battle within us is constant. Choosing to honor God in moments of temptation that challenge our character is the hardest part of running past the base. Joseph was challenged as Potiphar's wife suggested the most to him, yet his character remained strong. (Genesis 39: 8-9)
Second Base - Community - Win with Others
There are moments when we do everything right, and yet by doing the right thing we still receive backlash from others. Within those moments we need to remember
God sees us trying to do His work on earth. Though Joseph did everything he was supposed to, he still got the shorter end of things. Joseph was thrown in prison leading him to see God’s steadfast love. (Genesis 39:19-22)
Third Base - Competency - Win Results
Relying on the Lord in all situations of life can be most difficult, but learning that skill is what gives us the results we want. Joseph had leaned on the Lord for guidance and became competent of knowing and having a relationship with God . This gave Joseph the life he imagined for himself. (Genesis 50:20)
There is not one of us who hasn't been in a pit, a difficult situation, a prison, or a run of hard times. It is through these moments God lifts us up to rely on Him, to listen to Him, and to live a life of significance- to follow His game plan. Live by the pattern God has set before you.
