Being reminded of the blessing of community was inevitable when Pastor Dylan opened the new series “Friends” with the sermon title, “I’ll Be There For You.” If there is anything I have learned this past season from finishing my first year as an elementary teacher and dealing with a medical issue, it is we are not meant to do life alone.

Joyfully, today I can report that I am free of the Cholesteatoma, and I am pumped for my next year of teaching thanks to the power of prayer and the community surrounding me.

There were definitely times in high school and college when I didn’t feel like someone’s best friend. There were Sundays when I sat solo and felt like neon lights were pointing out the fact I wasn’t someone’s top choice.

For me, the Holy Spirit prompted me to realize that I first had to be content with Jesus as my number one friend. I would need to leave an empty seat beside me representing Him, before I would be able to fill it with a person.

Consistently through scripture, God declares, “I’ll be there for you!” He is always with us and He’ll never forsake us; even so, He wants us to have community. God continues to reveal various people in my life, such as family and life group members, who are there for me. I am humbled others are willing to invest in me. It encourages me to invest in others. Even the spiritually strong need someone to lean on, which is exactly why it is our duty as Christians to invest in individuals. As Pastor Dylan emphasized, “To have Godly friends, you must be a Godly friend.”

Everyone needs a friend; the friend somebody needs may just be you. God was there for us first, now we need to be there for others as we continue to add friends to the Kingdom. Our friends, whether new or old, will recognize us by our actions- standing up for what is right and most importantly loving people right where they are! Embrace the authority God has given you to make an impact through being a light in the dark world.
