I am reminiscing today about family as we prepare for Memorial Day. This will be my first Memorial without my mom. As sure as mom knew me, and she did know me very well, God knows me completely. He knows all my faults, all my failures, all my weaknesses, and yet He loves me in my brokenness. In today’s sermon Pastor Selena talked about how the love of Christ frees me to see myself, and love myself and others, as God does me. And from that, this all-encompassing love inspires me to be more like Christ. I can’t be perfect, but I can see how much more I can do to be more Christ-like.
How did Christ love us? John 15:12-13 explains He laid down his life for us, and there is no greater gift than that. We’ve been called to lay everything down before God. What have I not laid down before God? What is keeping me from having full freedom?
Pastor Selena talked about her “red robe” and the comfort she felt when wearing it. What is mine? Maybe it’s living life every day doing the “same things: Going to work, coming home, seeing family…. all of those are of great comfort, and yet I see they also allow me to become very robotic in some ways. I have the expectation of what every day of my life will be life, and yet God would have me do more, and be more.
Matthew 10:39 says if you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life to Me (God), you will find it. The things we sometimes see as “freedom” are the things that can ensnare us. We lose our freedom when we live without Christ in us.
I pray that I will remember how fleeting life is, the great gift of salvation God has given us through Christ, and the responsibility we must share what God has done for us with others. Amen!
